Roleo's streetscapes
My name is Roland Pierik, and welcome to my secondary homepage dedicated to street photography – this is my primary homepage. I live in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Besides my day job as a professor of philosophy of law at Maastricht University, I am also an avid street photographer, time permitting. I aim to capture ordinary street life in an extraordinary way.
With a camera in my hand, I am primarily interested in human beings and human artifacts: things that were made by human beings.
Wandering around the city, I seek to observe things that might remain oblivious to others. I hope to turn ordinary urban moments into something remarkable, using juxtaposed elements to form a new synthesis that is unusual, even though the juxtaposed elements themselves may be ordinary.
What I like about street photography is that the moment you bring your camera to the streets, the world is infinite with photographs. The only thing is to notice them and adequately capture them. And as Robert Frank said: "Things go away, so you have to be there when they are there."
On these pages, I showcase my attempts to catch some of these photographs.
